Ah, Copenhagen. The land of delicious food at restaurants whose names I will never be able to pronounce. How I miss you already. Now, I stumbled upon Nyboders Koekken (furthermore referred to as NK) the usual way – strategic internet comparison searching. First thing to note, make a reservation online before you go. While it was fairly empty when I showed up at around 6:30pm, the place was packed by 8. With good reason.
NK’s specialty is Danish food like you might eat at home, but the best version of it. When I got to my dessert course, the waitress stopped and told me that she used to eat the same kind of strawberry porridge when she was a little girl. Apparently, when she started working at NK and saw it on the menu, she ordered it immediately. Once I had it, I understood why, but I get ahead of myself.
I started out with the “Classic prawn cocktail and toast melba,” which can be roughly translated to shrimp salad and (heavily) buttered toast. It was a perfect temperature – the toast piping hot and the shrimp chilled well – and was topped with caviar.

Next up was the “Wienerschnitzel.” That shredded stuff on top was NOT cheese as I first thought. (Forgive me, the bartenders here are liberal with the Danish beer.) It was fresh shredded horseradish with capers and a spiced herring filet. In the pitcher was hot gravy to pour over your perfectly crispy veal steak.

Finally, I get to the “Danish traditional strawberry porridge.” It was essentially stewed strawberries, but that hardly does it justice. Once you poured the cold cream over the top, it tasted almost like strawberry ice cream but with two different temperatures and textures happening at once. 10 out of 10 would eat again.

Alas, at this point, I ran out of room. *gasp* However, never fear dear readers, towards the end of the meal one of the waitresses informed me that “the whole kitchen” was impressed with my appetite. I’m fairly sure it was meant as a compliment. And with my compliment in tow, I rolled out of the very hyggelig restaurant to try to sleep it off at my AirBnb.
xoxo
